father's day portraits // The Family Room, San Marino, California
My friend Karen started this amazing community space for new parents in San Marino, California, called The Family Room. It brings together professionals and soon-to-be or new parents to educate and support each other. For their Father's Day event, I donated my time to hold five minute mini-sessions as Father's Day gifts. It was a good challenge for me to connect with and try to capture personalities in such a short time frame. As each person entered the room I explained my approach in trying to capture interactions rather than posed portraits and was so pleased to get an overwhelming positive response and even a sense of relief to not have to pose.
It was such a fun morning and a pleasure to meet so many people with their little loves. Each session was different in feeling and emotion with much of the direction coming from the children themselves and their unique connection to their parents. The one constant was love. That is one of the things I love best about photographing families - there is always lots of love that even ends up absorbing me! It's absolutely the best feeling and why you'll usually find a smile on my face when I'm behind the camera.
Thanks again to Karen for inviting me to be a part of this event, to the parents for trusting my approach, and to the kids who were their absolutely adorable selves!
